CCYC Pursuit 1 Race Debrief

The first pursuit race was a chance to learn across the boat. Arseniy took the helm, new combinations handled the bow and sail trim, and the crew built confidence through the race. A fast windward pass on the final reach and a strong leeward douse created the separation we needed before the last beat. Published results now list Sivka ninth overall and second among the three J/105s racing.

The pursuit start made line judgment less obvious, with several fleets sharing the area at nearby start times. We found a workable start, possibly from the second row, while Arseniy practiced the sharper turns needed to create space and kill time. Better agreement on the line position and nearby fleets' start times would simplify the approach.

• Practice jibes helped Arseniy settle into the helm, and Stephen picked up the jib-tacking routine quickly.
• We escaped IWM's dirty air, then timed the first windward layline well enough to put them behind us.
• The kite hoist was clean, and a committed windward pass on the final reach carried us ahead of IWM.
• The crew executed an unfamiliar starboard-side leeward douse, rounded several boat lengths ahead of IWM, and sailed a clean final beat.

• Uncertain start-line geometry and limited knowledge of nearby start times complicated the opening.
• Downwind course choices and traffic at the SE mark appear to have added distance compared with Phantom.
• We held the high, fast passing angle longer than necessary, adding traffic pressure before the final douse.
• Communication between bow and helm was inconsistent, including a jibe begun before the helm was ready.

When people change roles, relay the maneuver plan from helm to bow and confirm readiness before starting. A shared call matters even more when the douse or rounding differs from the usual routine.

A strong result with people in new roles showed how much the crew has learned. Keep that flexibility, while making start geometry, maneuver readiness, and front-to-back communication more explicit.
