CCYC A5 Race Debrief

The start left us buried behind Erizo, and two early calls about whether to carry the kite were wrong. Each time the crew recovered without compounding the mistake. Strong passing speed on the reaches and a fast final beat put us ahead of Phantom and IWM and officially secured the CCYC A Series among the J/105s.

The south course had a heavily favored boat end and an awkward line for a 200-degree true wind. We sailed too far past the pin during the pre-start and missed the normal 3-2-1 geometry. With under a minute remaining, we tacked inside the committee boat among starboard-tack traffic. A late luff took longer to unwind than expected, and we began in dirty air behind Erizo with no immediate escape lane. The better choice would have been a small heading change to control speed and more confidence bringing our bow even with the leading boats.

• Joel consistently identified the useful shifts on the first beat, helping us escape dirty air and reach the mark in touch with the leaders.
• Once the kite was hoisted on the first reach, the boat recovered ground quickly on Erizo, Erica, and Phantom.
• The crew recovered from both incorrect downwind sail-plan calls without turning them into larger handling failures.
• The final beat was excellent: a clean tack onto Phantom's line produced better height and speed and left us well ahead at the finish.

• The pre-start loop ran too far past the pin, and the final luff created a slow, dirty-air start.
• We initially called for no kite on a leg that favored it, delaying the hoist until the fleet demonstrated the correct plan.
• Later we carried the kite toward a leg better suited to a Mexican douse, forcing a clean but strategically slow windward takedown.

Separate maneuver execution from tactical judgment. The crew can recover the boat; the next gain is making the sail-plan call earlier from course geometry rather than reacting to the boats around us.

The source debrief did not yet include a WakeRoute replay link. The most useful future review will compare the dirty-air start, the delayed first hoist, and the final-beat gain against Phantom and IWM.

This was not a perfect race, but it was a strong series-clinching one. The crew's ability to recover, pass, and finish fast kept imperfect decisions from deciding the result.
