With storms nearby and limited practice time, Gary drove while Dimitry moved to pit. The crew handled the heavier moments well, kept IWM close, and recovered from taking the kite down too early. The main lessons were to recognize when a windward douse remains available and to keep driving technique steady as pressure builds.

The line was long and strongly favored at the committee-boat end for a southwest course in a 210-degree true wind. The first 3-2-1 attempt ran behind schedule, and ducking Archimedes on port pushed us farther from the line. We tacked with about 30 seconds remaining and sailed at full trim toward the gun. It was not the intended boat-end start, but it compared reasonably with the other two J/105s and left a workable lane.

• Two clean first-beat tacks and a timely tack away from IWM found a lift to the windward mark.

Make the conservative weather call, but keep the next maneuver available. Confidence in a windward douse would have let us carry the kite longer without committing the boat to unnecessary risk.
