CCYC A3 Race Debrief

We identified the favored committee-boat end, accelerated through the line with more speed than the nearby boats, and rounded the first mark leading the J/105s. The race became harder downwind when traffic blocked our lane and the breeze collapsed near shore, but disciplined light-air sailing preserved the result.

The committee-boat end was heavily favored. Kinship and Pura Vida tacked early and tried to stall close to the line; we tacked 3-4 boat lengths behind and slightly to leeward, preserving room to accelerate. That extra runway mattered. We turned down at the right time, crossed with a clear lane, and WakeRoute showed roughly 1.5 kt more speed than Kinship at the gun. Pura Vida was called OCS and did not return.

• The crew arrived early, completed the rig setup, and adjusted shroud tension for the light forecast.
• The start combined a favored-end plan with enough distance to accelerate instead of trying to park the boat.
• Upwind speed and layline judgment were strong enough to reach the first mark first among the J/105s.
• As the wind shifted and faded, higher traveler and a renewed focus on clean air helped preserve speed on the final beat.

• The kite hoist after the reach was slower than planned, giving nearby boats an early opportunity.
• Sailing into Walrus traffic forced a lane change and likely cost at least a boat length while Pura Vida passed.
• We held offshore slightly too long before jibing, then lost pressure near the NW mark as the breeze collapsed.

In light, unstable breeze, clean air and an unobstructed lane are often worth more than the theoretically perfect angle.

WakeRoute highlights the boat-end bias and the quality of the final acceleration. The replay also makes the traffic loss near Walrus and the changing pressure closer to shore easier to separate from pure boatspeed.

A repeatable start routine and strong upwind pace created the result. The next improvement is translating that speed through traffic and rapidly changing pressure without surrendering the lane.
