CCYC A2 Race Debrief

We raced with the new UK main and jib for the first time, returned after a marginal OCS call, and then sailed through the fleet. The biggest gains came from clean tacks and an inside, faster line under kite; the biggest opportunities remain start-line judgment, halyard execution, and layline discipline.

The 3-2-1 routine felt controlled, but we tacked onto starboard with one minute remaining while already close to the line. We tried to kill speed head-to-wind, yet the J/105 would not slow below roughly 4.1 kt. We turned down and accelerated with room to leeward, then received a late OCS call 20-30 seconds after the gun. A tight jibe and return put us behind Kinship and at the back of the fleet. WakeRoute suggests the call was extremely marginal, but the durable lesson is to create the final runway earlier rather than trying to park a heavy boat close to the line.

• The new UK sails looked strong, and the crew quickly established useful jib-car references farther aft than with the older jibs.
• Every first-beat tack was clean, and the boat carried enough speed to begin recovering immediately after the restart.
• The reach under kite produced the largest gains of the evening; we sailed inside and faster than the boats ahead.
• Jon handled the kite well in his first sustained turn flying it, and the crew executed a clean douse before the final reach.

• The marginal OCS and delayed radio call forced a full restart and left us last.
• The first kite hoist stopped short, requiring the final feet of halyard to be ground up under load.
• An early tack near the first windward layline led to two extra tacks and about a 30-meter loss while avoiding dirty air.

A restart does not end the race. Reset quickly, sail the boat cleanly, and let repeatable speed and handling create passing opportunities.

WakeRoute shows how close the start-line call was and where the boat recovered against IWM and YNot. It also reinforces that setting accurate line ends and preserving speed through the final approach matter more than trying to stop the boat near the line.

Going from a restart at the back to first among six J/105s made this a convincing speed test for the new sails and the crew. Better start-line margin and cleaner hoists can turn that pace into a much simpler race.
